Planning a Convention Survival Kit

This weekend I am heading to Irelands largest gaming convention Gaelcon, last time I attended was 12 years ago! Over the past year or two I have rediscovered gaming and am really looking forward to going. I’ll only make it for one day this year, but am planning ahead already.

When I last went to Gaelcon, the most important things to pack were miniatures for the war-games, Jolt Cola, and a Magic the Gathering deck. But, those days are gone and so a new list is needed. There are some great posts out there about what to pack for a games convention (especially if you are doing a full weekend). Here are a selection:

The Gaming Convention Survival Guide   Slyflourish.com

‘If you’re having trouble deciding what games to bring, go for the smaller and lighter ones’.

A good practical guide about what to put in your bag to get through a convention weekend.

The Convention Packing Checklist  bensrpgpile.com

Bens even provides a packing checklist to download. A great list to help you prepare.

I’m planning my own Convention Kit for this year, taking some tips from the links above and also what I am looking for out of the Convention. From practical (Water bottle) to essential (bag of dice). I’ll post a pic of the kit once I have it made.

One thing I think is a must have is a few go-to small games for those in-between times. Here are some suggestions:

Munchkin: Pick the flavour that best suits you (classic / Star Munchkin / Cthulhu Munchkin / Pirate Munchkin etc.) and have it with you.

Fluxx: For when you don’t want to teach people the rules of a game, just play Fluxx. Also comes in a wide variety of flavours.

Zombie Dice: Handy time killer, easy to learn, impossible to master.

Checkmark “F’ntastik!”

Credits

I’m not going to lie. This one makes me laugh. When the guys at Snowman, who make this brilliant new reminders app Checkmark came to me a couple months ago for a video, I liked their app so much and they were okay making a silly one, so I put my friend Tony on the case. Because Tony is silly.

It was a stroke of genius to cast Danny Cohen as the ambiguously European(?) narrator. Danny came on my radar and legit freaked me out two years ago when he claimed to be my little brother. I got over my fears a realized he’s legit funny. Now he’s helping me build out my company website because that’s his day job. Talented guy.

One more story: when the Checkmark guys showed me Checkmark, I said, “well, that’s great, but one problem I have with Reminders app is that its location based reminder tells me to do stuff the second I pull in my garage. By the time I’m in the house, I’ve already forgotten! What I really need is to set a reminder for X minutes after I’ve arrived somewhere.” And guess what they did. They built that feature and I love it. That’s service.

Available June 12th.

”So we’re going to call their BS when we see it and we need your help to call them on it too and set the record straight. So share this, tweet it, facebook it, I keep hearing about tumblr and whatever that is…please use that too. Thank you.”

And a Tumblr shout-out.
